Alma Jantunen is a Finnish glass artist whose sculptural practice draws inspiration from the organic forms, vibrant colours and subtle movements of the natural world. Working with blown glass, she creates expressive sculptures that combine soft, fluid shapes with a distinctive sense of character and vitality.

Curatorial Profile

Alma Jantunen’s work explores the expressive possibilities of glass through an intuitive relationship with nature, colour and form. Her sculptures take inspiration from living organisms, plants, insects and natural phenomena, translating familiar elements into playful, often unexpected compositions. Rounded contours, flowing silhouettes and rich colours give her work a sense of softness and movement that contrasts with the weight and solidity of the material.

Her creative process begins with fleeting impressions and visual associations, which she captures through quick sketches before developing them into detailed plans. In the glassblowing studio, these ideas are realised through a physically demanding process that requires precision, timing and close collaboration with her team. While each sculpture begins with a defined concept, the unpredictable behaviour of molten glass allows for moments of discovery, sometimes leading to outcomes beyond the original design.

With three decades of experience in glassblowing, Jantunen has developed a distinctive sculptural language rooted in the material’s natural fluidity. Her works retain traces of the movement and energy involved in their creation, capturing the colours of distant horizons, weathered stones and changing landscapes. Through this interplay of controlled technique and organic expression, she transforms observations of the natural world into sculptural objects filled with colour, character and a quiet sense of joy.

Artist Statement

Decorative black glass tree sculpture with colorful green and blue spherical leaves in a red bowl-shaped base

My glass sculptures are inspired by the soft shapes and vibrant colors found in nature. With 30 years of experience as a glassblower, I design and execute every single piece myself in my studio. Shaping the heavy, molten glass is an intense physical process that relies on seamless teamwork and precise communication.

My goal is to bring the organic shapes of plants and living things into glass. Through my art, I simply want to share the joy, color, and life that I see around me.
