Hayden Wilson’s artistic practice reflects a lifelong connection to glass, shaped by his upbringing in the mountains of Western North Carolina and his experience as a second-generation glass artist. Although surrounded by the material from an early age, he began pursuing glass professionally after completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture at the University of North Carolina Asheville.

Wilson works across a broad range of forms, from decorative vessels and functional objects to individual sculptures and custom lighting. His practice spans both sculptural and applied glassmaking, bringing the material into different contexts, from independent artworks to commissioned pieces developed for specific spaces. This breadth of work reflects the diverse possibilities of glass as both an artistic and functional medium.

Alongside his individual practice, Wilson has played an important role in the glassmaking community of Western North Carolina. He helped establish the Asheville Glass Center and spent nine years as Studio Manager and subsequently Studio Director following its transition into the nonprofit North Carolina Glass Center. His involvement reflects a longstanding commitment to the development and support of the regional glass community.

Today, Wilson owns and operates a private glass studio in Asheville, where he continues to create sculptural works, decorative objects and custom commissions. His work is represented by galleries across the United States, including Habitat Gallery in Michigan and Blue Spiral 1 in Asheville.

Artist Statement

Purple and pink abstract glass sculpture with black geometric lines displayed on a black stand

Glass has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up as a second-generation glass artist in the mountains of Western North Carolina gave me an early connection to the material, although I began pursuing it professionally after completing my studies in sculpture.

My practice encompasses a wide range of work, from sculptural pieces and decorative vessels to functional objects and custom lighting. Working across these different forms allows me to explore the versatility of glass and its possibilities in both artistic and designed environments.

Throughout my career, I have also been closely involved in supporting the glassmaking community in Western North Carolina. Helping establish the Asheville Glass Center and later working with the North Carolina Glass Center formed a significant part of my professional experience.

Today, I work from my private studio in Asheville, creating individual sculptures, functional glass and commissioned pieces for different spaces.
