Jaroslav Prošek,
Czech Republic
Jaroslav Prošek is a Czech glass artist whose sculptural practice combines traditional Bohemian glassmaking techniques with a contemporary approach to form and material. Drawing inspiration from nature, maritime environments and everyday objects, he creates distinctive sculptures in glass and crystal, often incorporating wood, metal and stone.
Curatorial Profile
Jaroslav Prošek’s artistic practice is rooted in the traditions of Czech glassmaking, combining technical precision with an individual approach to sculptural form. Working in Northern Bohemia, a region with a longstanding glassmaking heritage, he creates sculptures that explore the relationship between shape, colour and the optical qualities of glass. His works range from simplified, carefully balanced forms to more elaborate compositions inspired by the natural world.
Prošek’s journey into glass art developed through practical experience rather than formal artistic education. After working in technical departments of Czech manufacturing companies, he joined Crystal Caviar, a producer of luxury chandeliers and glass sculptures. This experience introduced him to the artistic possibilities of glass and marked an important transition from technical production towards independent creative expression.
An important influence on his early development was the Czech glass sculptor Vlastimil Beránek, under whom Prošek studied traditional sculptural glassmaking techniques. While this foundation helped shape his understanding of the medium, Prošek gradually developed his own artistic direction, drawing inspiration from the sea, sailing, nature and elements of contemporary culture.
His practice centres on mould-melted glass, complemented by cutting, grinding, engraving and other surface treatments. Prošek explores the interaction between colour, transparency and sculptural volume, often combining glass with contrasting materials such as wood, stainless steel, bronze and marble. These combinations introduce variations in texture and visual weight, extending the expressive possibilities of his compositions.
Through his exploration of material, form and surface, Prošek contributes to the continuing development of Czech sculptural glass. His work reflects both the technical heritage of the region and a personal interest in translating familiar shapes and natural references into contemporary glass sculpture.

Artist Statement
My inspiration comes from the world around me, particularly nature, the sea, sailing and the forms of everyday objects. I am interested in transforming these influences into sculptures that explore shape, colour and the expressive possibilities of glass. Some of my works are based on simple forms, while others develop more complex compositions.
My creative process often begins with a small wooden model, allowing me to explore the shape before creating the final sculpture. I work primarily with mould-melted glass, using techniques such as cutting, grinding and engraving to achieve the desired form and surface. The choice of technique depends on the individual work and the expression I want to achieve.
I am particularly interested in the relationship between material, shape and colour, and in discovering new possibilities through experimentation with glass.
