Javier Gómez is a Spanish glass artist whose sculptural practice explores the relationship between light, colour, transparency and space. Working primarily with cold-laminated glass, he creates layered compositions in which pictorial and sculptural qualities converge.
Curatorial Profile
Javier Gómez approaches glass as both material and optical space. Through carefully constructed layers, colour becomes embedded within the sculpture rather than applied simply to its surface, creating a shifting relationship between transparency, reflection and volume.
His works resist a single, fixed reading. As the viewer moves around them, internal spaces and exterior forms continually realign, while changing light reveals different densities, colours and reflections. This sense of transformation is central to Gómez’s practice: a single sculpture can offer multiple visual experiences without losing the distinct material presence of glass.
Gómez began working with glass at the age of fourteen in his family’s workshop, establishing a relationship with the material that has continued throughout his artistic career. His practice combines this long technical familiarity with an ongoing investigation into how far glass can be transformed while retaining its essential character.

Artist Statement
I am interested in the expressive possibilities of glass — its transparency, colour, depth and its ability to interact with light. My work explores these qualities through sculptural forms built from layers of cold-laminated glass.
I approach each piece as a composition in which colour, form and transparency are closely connected. The layering of glass allows me to create a sense of depth and movement within the object, revealing different relationships between its internal structure and outer form as the viewing angle changes.
Light is an essential part of this process. It passes through, reflects from and is absorbed by the layers of glass, continually altering the perception of the work. I am interested in creating objects that invite the viewer to move around them and discover how their appearance changes through light, perspective and space.
