Marc Carmen is an American glass artist whose practice combines traditional Venetian glassblowing techniques with intricate patternwork and optical exploration. Working independently in a studio he designed and built himself, he creates sculptural glass objects that investigate the interplay of light, symmetry and transparency.

Curatorial Profile

Marc Carmen approaches glass as both a sculptural medium and an optical instrument, exploring how transparency, refraction and intricate internal structures can transform the experience of form. Drawing on centuries-old Venetian glassblowing traditions, particularly cane and murrine techniques, his work develops complex geometric compositions that shift and multiply as light passes through the material.

Central to his practice is the relationship between pattern, symmetry and perception. Rather than treating ornament as a surface element, Carmen incorporates patternwork within the glass itself, creating layered visual structures that invite the viewer to look through, around and into each object. His exploration of mandala-like geometries introduces a sense of rhythm and spatial complexity, allowing a seemingly contained form to become an evolving optical experience.

Carmen's approach is also distinguished by the independence of his production process. Drawing on his technical background in plumbing, heating and furnace maintenance, he designed and constructed the furnaces and equipment required to work entirely on his own — an uncommon approach in hot glassmaking. This technical autonomy allows him to experiment with established methods and push beyond their conventional limitations.

Through this combination of historical knowledge, technical experimentation and optical inquiry, Carmen reinterprets traditional glassmaking processes as a means of contemporary sculptural expression.

Artist Statement

Black and white glass sculpture on a square base

Unique to the medium, glass allows the artist to work with the physics of light—to magnify, reflect, and refract it—thereby playfully challenging the viewer's expectations. My work embraces these inherent properties of clear glass, while also using the glass as a transparent matrix for suspending patternwork created with centuries-old Venetian glassblowing techniques. The result is an exploration of the mandalic in three dimensions, transforming an archetypal form into an interactive experience of light, symmetry, and wonder.

All of my work is created solo, an anomaly in the world of glassblowing. After a career as a tradesman and technician, I utilized my engineering experience to design and construct custom furnaces and studio equipment to suit my unique style of solo glassmaking. This allows me to carefully control every variable in the laborious process of transforming raw sand into a refined glass object.

I studied glassblowing at the Penland School of Crafts in Penland, North Carolina, the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York, and UrbanGlass in Brooklyn, New York.
