Martin Potsch is a glass artist and designer whose work explores the expressive possibilities of colour, transparency, and three-dimensional form.

Combining simple vessel shapes with a painterly approach to glass, Potsch treats the transparent surface as a space for artistic expression. His practice is driven by a longstanding fascination with the material and an ongoing exploration of its versatility, developed through close collaboration with skilled glassmakers.

Curatorial Profile

Abstract cobalt-blue glass sculpture with geometric protrusions on a white surface

Martin Potsch approaches glass as both a sculptural medium and a surface for artistic expression. His practice is rooted in a lifelong fascination with the material, beginning with collecting glass objects and vessels during childhood and later developing into his own artistic exploration.

Following a workshop at the Glasfachschule Zwiesel, Potsch began creating his first works in collaboration with experienced glassmakers. This collaborative approach remains an important aspect of his practice, allowing him to concentrate on artistic conception while drawing on the technical knowledge and regional traditions of glassmaking.

His vessels are characterised by relatively simple, recognisable forms that provide a framework for expressive compositions of colour. Rather than treating transparency as a purely optical quality, Potsch uses the glass surface as a space for painterly experimentation, exploring how colour, light, and three-dimensional structure influence one another.

The relationship between a restrained physical form and a more expressive visual language creates a distinctive tension within his work. Colour becomes an active element of the composition, transforming the perception of the vessel and emphasising the relationship between its surface and three-dimensional form.

For Potsch, glass offers an inexhaustible field of experimentation. His artistic direction is guided by curiosity about the material's formability and a desire to deepen his understanding of its expressive potential. Each work reflects this continuing dialogue between artistic intention, material properties, and the expertise of the glassmakers with whom he collaborates.

Artist Statement

Abstract arrangement of colorful sculptural glass vessels with wavy geometric forms on a reflective white surface

Glass represents a lifelong passion and affection for me. I have been collecting glass objects and vessels since childhood.

As a designer and artist, I am particularly interested in the three-dimensional possibilities of glass, combined with the phenomena of transparency and colour. The boundless formability of the material offers an inexhaustible playground.

I focus exclusively on creation. Collaborating with outstanding glassmakers and experiencing regional characteristics add an inspiring element to my work.
